About job crafting

Article · 8 min · Lesson 1 of 13

By the end of this lesson you will be able to understand how job crafting can bring out your best at work.

About Work

This course refers to work often. This is more than a paid job. Work is whatever fills your days and asks something of you right now. For many people, that is a job. For others, their work is volunteering, caregiving, or studying. For those between jobs, the work is the job search itself.

If you are searching for work, this course offers a second gain. The skills in this course will help you choose roles worth shaping, and step into the next one ready to align it with your strengths from the start. Choose the type of role that is real for you right now, and keep this role in mind at every stage of this course.

Job Crafting

In any situation, work is influenced by three common elements: tasks, thoughts, and relationships. Combined, these create meaning. One way to align your work with your strengths and build a greater sense of meaning is called job crafting. This is the practice of adjusting elements of your work to activate your strengths and feel a greater sense of meaning. In almost any situation, people have more freedom to shape their work than they realize.

Think of an ordinary week in your current or most recent work. You know what you need to achieve and what each day asks of you. Some of it uses the best of what you offer. Some of it does not, and that part quietly wears people down.

The good news is that the parts that wear people down can often be changed through job crafting. Before looking for a new role, is there something you can change to enrich your work? Job crafting can help you answer that question.

Check-In

Work that isn't aligned with your expectations or capabilities drains commitment, engagement, and energy. Imagine the opposite when work brings out your best more often than not. Notice what thoughts or feelings come to mind. Those are the thoughts and feelings this course was designed to build and sustain.

When you're ready to begin, use this course as a guide to make your career work for you.
